I think my main issue was with the protagonist, Young-sook (whose name I just had to look up even though I finished this book only two days ago, so that’s never a good sign). I wouldn’t say there’s anything ostensibly wrong with this book, and it’s not exactly a radical departure from the rest of See’s historical fiction: it follows a friendship between two women against the backdrop of a turbulent period in East Asian history (though here the setting is the Korean Jeju Island instead of See’s usual China).īut despite the tried and true blueprint whose familiarity should have been comforting, I really struggled to get invested in The Island of Sea Women. It took me over three months to finish this book, and it wasn’t for a lack of interest in the author this was my seventh Lisa See novel and interestingly, not even my least favorite. ![]() ![]() ![]() Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. This is the sort of story that properly takes over. There are so many questions that we need to be answered in this story will they save Grey, what is the mystery behind their disappearance and can they ever live normal lives? Strange things are going on around them, even finding a decaying body at Grey’s flat and then there is the weird man who appears to be following them, with the intention of causing harm. Where they are, odd things very often happen so, when the eldest sister, Grey disappears her two siblings feel a desperate need to find out what has happened. Iris, the youngest sister just wants to be normal, but her two sisters, Vivi and Grey, are at the centre of media interest. Fast forward to the present and they are still a subject of awe, fear and questioning.
